Crisis line activated in wake of Texas shooting
Mercy Maricopa has activated its crisis response plan to help the community cope with the shooting Sunday in Texas.
Crisis Response Network has set up a dedicated 24-hour crisis line, 1-800-203-CARE (2273), available to anyone who may be in crisis or who just wants to talk. The information is available on their website, www.crisisnetwork.org
Teen Lifeline, 602-248-8337, is another good resource for teens and parents.
It’s important to understand that traumatic events affect people in different ways. You may begin to feel the effects soon after the event, or a few days or weeks later. Responses to trauma can last for weeks.
Remember that these responses are normal. They can have an impact on people who are rescue workers, friends and relatives. Traumatic events also can impact people who were not directly involved, but who may have known a victim or seen coverage of the event on television.
Common reactions to trauma can vary. They may include:
- Fear, anxiety or depression
- Nausea, dizziness, changes in appetite or sleep patterns
- Withdrawal from daily activities
- Symptoms of avoidance, including staying away from places related to the trauma or feeling detached
- Emotional outbursts or being easily startled
- Mood shifts or confusion
- Lack of concentration, not feeling like “yourself”
Here are ways to cope:
- Understand that these reactions are normal, especially soon after the traumatic event
- Keep up your usual routine
- Be with other people. Don’t isolate yourself
- Exercise, try to relax and be kind to yourself
- Allow yourself to feel bad, but recognize that some things are beyond your control
- Reach out to family, friends and your faith community for support. Talk about your feelings and what you’re experiencing
- Try to face your fears and try not to shy away from situations, people and places that may remind you of the trauma
- Seek trained help if you feel you need it by reaching out to a crisis line or mental health center
